Review of Waveform 8, from a Tracktion 6 user's perspective

Image
Waveform 8 (which was supposed to be T8 before the name change) is the latest version of Tracktion which is my DAW of choice. I downloaded a 30 days trail of latest version (8.2.7) to test it and here is my review. First Impressions ------------------ Waveforms UI looks familiar to anyone who has used Tracktion before, the first time i opened it, it detected all my tracktion projects,my plugins with ease. Waveform retains the same layout and controls as previous versions of Tracktion which is a good thing if you are a tracktion user. The UI is a huge improvement from Tracktion 6 and looks pleasent. It does however add few new elements such as a seperate view for Piano Roll, LFO Modulators, MIDI randomizer and a mixer view. Built-in Plugins ----------------- Buit-in plugins include all the old Tracktion effects, native sampler but it also comes with few extra instruments and effects such as Collective,Micro synth pack and master mix.FM synth is based on MDA DX10 whi...

Top 5 Tracktion 6 (Windows, Mac, Linux)   Tracktion is the DAW i use. I love it for its unique workflow and its rack. Pros: 1) Unique Interface, Full Featured 2) Drag and Drop Controls 3) Rack 4) Audio Comping, Time Streching 5) Single Window Interface Cons: 1) Very different from other DAWs 2) Not so good GUI  Soundbridge (Windows, Mac)   I found this while randomly browsing and its a surprisingly capable DAW. Synth1: Introduction to subtractive synths.

Image
If you are new to sound designing, subtractive synthesis is the way to start things of. Synth1 is one of the best freeware subtractive synths around with tons of patches released for it. It is also one other best sounding synths. One disadvantage, its user interface is not friendly. This post gives an introduction to its interface, explains some basic synth parameters which are common to all synths and gives you an idea of synth1 and subtractive synthesis in general. In future posts, i am going to do a few sound design tutorials (dubstep basically) using synth1.  The above diagram shows all the sections available. Open the diagram in a new tab to use it as a reference when i explain the sections below. 1) Oscillator section Synth1 contains 2 oscillators containing basic waveforms. It also contains a sub osc containing 4 basic waveforms. Oscillator section is where our sound originates. The sound is shaped be many parameters which is gonna be covered in other sections aswell....

TOP 10 FREE MUSIC MAKING APPS FOR ANDROID

Image
Android is a platform which is not considered seriously as a music making platform because of its audio latency. But as android has evolved the latency has decreased and with android 8.0, the latency is minimum. The things are about to change. More and more music making apps which were ios only are now coming to android. These are the Android apps that i think are the best you can get without spending a buck. Check them out, they are all free. If you want an extended list of freeware android music making apps, check the link at the bottom of this article.

List of free android music apps (The only free android list you'll ever need!)

There are very few decent free apps for android and they are overshadowed by lot of toys. So, i decided to make a list. Also, i enjoy making free software lists. These are good enough to jot down your ideas/ make very basic demos. DAWs/Grooveboxes/MIDI Sequencer ----------------------- 1) Stagelight Audio/MIDI DAW 2) Groove Mixer (Groovebox) 3) Walkband (Pocket Band) 4) Indigo Beat Maker (Audio Sequencer) 5) GStomper Rhythm (Groovebox) 6) BoomBox (Groovebox) 7) Music Maker (MIDI Sequencer) 8 ) VuKnob (DAW) 9) Beat Machine - Audio Sequencer (By Vaytricks) 10) MidSequer (Midi Sequencer) 11) kosm 12) HipHop Maker Lite (Regarded this as a toy, but it has sample import and wave export + MPC Like layout, pretty useful) Semi-Free: 1) Beatonal (Groovebox), Audioid (Groovebox), Mikrowave (Groovebox, very cheap paid version) [These softwares can't save projects but can export audio, you can use these audio files in some of the applications mentioned above].  2) UfxLoops (N...

20 Free Dubstep Presets for the amazing Atlantis Synth!

Atlantis is a hybrid synth released in 2009. Its 32 bit only. Its no longer actively developed. That's the bad part of it. But the good part is IT SOUNDS AWESOME! I use Tracktion 5 x64. So there is no way i'm able to use 32bit vst. But synths like this and freehand forced me to find out a way. So, here were my options 1) Use Bridge- jbridge was not too stable with my system 2) Use a rewire DAW which has bridging. It was too tiresome as well. 3) Use another DAW which can host 32 bit vst, sample the notes (or a single note if its long enough) and feed it to a sampler. There are many free 32 bit hosts. And i chose LMMS 64 bit with Internal bridging as my second DAW. The sampling part is the most fun part out there. I do it by exporting notes of 5-6 bars length via LMMS (or DAW). It can also be done by tools such as MRecorder vst (Melda). So, the point was, this instrument forced me to sample it for use in 64 bit DAW. Why? Because its a monster! It contains 3 Oscillators w...

Tracktion 4 Review How good can be a freeware DAW? I've tried many free DAWs.All offer some great features but since they are free,They have huge amount of limitations. List of freeware DAWs i've tried: Studio One Prime: This piece of software has a wonderful workflow but lacks VST support. Its a Very big limitation for electronic musicians like me.So i had to say Goodbye to it. LMMS: Its an open source DAW and good for EDM but we have a band too. I Chucked it. MU LAB Free (Which is great for a Plugin Developer because you can simply Drag and Drop your plugins), Samplitude Silver etc have Track limitation. And Forget Pro Tools First, Its just a demo of PT than anything else.I recommend using FL Studio Demo than using PT First. Last year, Tracktion Corporation decided to make Tracktion 4 Free.I Tried it. My First Impression   To be honest, my first impression was "Wth is this thing". The Default User Interface was very ugly.I Had no c...
